Cultural mediation

The MBAL’s cultural mediation programme is designed to appeal to an ever-growing audience. Creative workshops for children and adults, brunches, round tables, shows and many other activities are offered throughout the exhibition cycles.


Since its reopening in 2014, the Museum of Fine Arts Le Locle (MBAL) has been a leading institution in Switzerland. Between January 2014 and June 2022 it was under the direction of Nathalie Herschdorfer. Since June 2022 the Italian curator and writer Federica Chiocchetti (PhD) is the new director. The museum’s collection consists of some 5000 items and includes nearly 400 paintings, a hundred sculptures, several objects of applied art as well as a remarkable number of prints, posters, drawings and watercolours by Swiss and international artists from the 17th to the 21st century. It is the result of more than a hundred years of enrichment through generous donations, purchases and prestigious deposits and is periodically presented to the public on the occasion of temporary exhibitions.


ORBIT_E is a digital platform that serves as a virtual extension of MBAL. An experimental, transdisciplinary laboratory for digital art, this space extends and complements the museum’s artistic programming.
