Sabine Hess & Nicolas Polli
One Bed, Two Blankets, Eighty-Five Rules (Ein Bett, zwei Decken, fünfundachtzig Regeln) entstand als gemeinsames Fotoprojekt von Sabine Hess und Nicolas Polli, das 2023 während eines Aufenthalts im Valle Verzasca im Tessin begann. Nach mehreren Jahren Fernbeziehung ermöglichte ihnen dieser Aufenthalt, das Zusammenleben zu erproben und offen über ihre Bedürfnisse, Erwartungen und Ängste zu sprechen. Die Bilder entstanden direkt aus diesen Gesprächen, während sie gleichzeitig „Regeln” formulierten – kleine Vereinbarungen für das Zusammenleben.
Texte und Bilder vermischten sich nach und nach und führten zur ersten Ausgabe des Buches One Bed, Two Blankets, Sixty-Eight Rules (Ein Bett, zwei Decken, achtundsechzig Regeln).
Während das Buch diese Elemente in ein intimes und handliches Format überträgt, vermittelt die Ausstellung die Erfahrung auf visuelle und metaphorische Weise. Sie präsentiert sich als ein im Bau befindliches Haus, das die Besucher*innen physisch durchqueren können. Beim Betreten des Raumes entdecken sie eine Holzfassade, die die Baustelle symbolisiert. Die rohen Materialien stehen in bewusstem Kontrast zur eleganten Architektur des Raumes des Stil Sapin. Im Inneren beherbergen fünf unterschiedlich grosse Strukturen – noch ohne Dach – die Eindrücke und Anweisungen. Das Publikum ist eingeladen, sich zu bewegen und zu beobachten und sich an der Sorgfalt zu beteiligen, die für den Aufbau eines gemeinsamen Raumes erforderlich ist. Jede Iteration des Buches oder der Ausstellung ist leicht unterschiedlich, wie in einer sich entwickelnden Beziehung, die die Veränderungen des gemeinsamen Lebens widerspiegelt. Das unvollendete Haus wird so zu einer Metapher für den gemeinsamen Ort, den Hess und Polli aufbauen wollen: zerbrechlich, im Wandel begriffen und auf Vertrauen und Intimität gegründet.

One Bed, Two Blankets, Eighty-Five Rules began as a collaborative photographic project by Sabine Hess and Nicolas Polli, initiated in 2023 during a residency in Valle Verzasca in Ticino. After years of a long-distance relationship, the residency allowed them to test their cohabitation while openly discussing their needs, expectations, and fears. The images emerged directly from these conversations, alongside the formulation of “rules”, small conventions for a shared life. Texts and images gradually intertwined, leading to the first edition of the book One Bed, Two Blankets, Sixty-Eight Rules.
Whilst the book translates these elements into an intimate and portable format, the exhibition conveys the experience visually and metaphorically. It is presented as a house under construction that visitors can physically walk through. Upon entering the room, they discover a wooden façade symbolising the building site. The raw materials deliberately contrast with the elegance of the room’s sapin style architecture. Inside, five structures of varying sizes – as yet without roofs – house the prints and teh « rules ». The public is invited to move around and observe, taking part in the process required to edify a shared space. Each iteration of the book or exhibition is slightly different, as in an evolving relationship, reflecting the transformations of life as a couple. The unfinished house becomes a metaphor for the shared space Hess and Polli seek to build together — fragile, evolving, and based on trust and intimacy.

One Bed, Two Blankets, Eighty-Five Rules (Une letto, due coperte, ottantacinque regole) è un progetto fotografico collaborativo di Sabine Hess e Nicolas Polli, iniziato nel 2023 durante una residenza artistica in Valle Verzasca, in Ticino. Dopo anni di relazione a distanza, la residenza ha permesso loro di sperimentare la convivenza discutendo apertamente bisogni, aspettative e timori. Le immagini sono nate direttamente da queste conversazioni, insieme alla formulazione di “regole”, piccole convenzioni per la vita condivisa. Testi e immagini si sono progressivamente intrecciati, portando alla prima edizione del libro One Bed, Two Blankets, Sixty-Eight Rules (Une letto, due coperte, sessantotto regole).
Se il libro condensa questi elementi in un formato intimo e portatile, l’installazione traduce l’esperienza in modo visivo e metaforico. Essa si presenta come una casa in costruzione che il pubblico può attraversare fisicamente. Entrando nella sala si scopre una facciata in legno che simboleggia il cantiere. I materiali grezzi contrastano volutamente con l’eleganza dell’architettura in Style sapin della sala. All’interno, cinque strutture di dimensioni diverse – ancora prive di tetto – accolgono le stampe e le « regole ». Il pubblico è invitato a spostarsi e a osservare, prendendo parte all’attenzione necessaria all’edificazione di uno luogo condiviso. Ogni iterazione del libro o della mostra è leggermente diversa, come in una relazione in evoluzione, riflettendo le trasformazioni della vita a due. La casa incompiuta diventa così una metafora dello spazio condiviso che Hess e Polli cercano di costruire: fragile, evolutivo e fondato sulla fiducia e sull’intimità.
