Book presentation of Wet Proof at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London

On the occasion of the exhibition For One Solid Time, Wet: The Swimming Pool in the Imagination, MBAL is publishing Wet Proof, a unique waterproof artist’s book that can be read in the water—much like children’s bath books. Wet Proof functions both as an artwork on display and as a keepsake of the exhibition.

Replacing the traditional exhibition catalogue, this original publication features the work of London-based painter Mary Stephenson, whose subtly nuanced palette shifts between vibrant intensity and delicate pastel tones. The swimming pool is a recurring motif in Stephenson’s practice, and many of her paintings bring together hypnagogic environments, architectural worlds, and abstract forms. These evoke archetypes—physical spaces or objects—that engage the unconscious, emotions, and the elusive nature of memory.

Stephenson’s images are accompanied by a new work of fiction co-written by Candida Desideri and Lou Stoppard. The presentation is on view at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London.
